Determining Fundamental Competencies in Computational Modeling and Data Analysis
With computational modeling and data analysis skills becoming an increasingly integral part of modern scientific work and research, understanding the specific competencies and skills required for individuals to participate in this work is growing more important. Motivated by curriculum evaluation and reform, we conducted a series of semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with experts in academia and industry in order to better inform the curriculum of the computational modeling and data analysis courses offered by the Department of Computational Math, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University. Through thematic analysis, we have formed a set of descriptions of fundamental competencies and skills needed for work and research in computational science. Additionally, other themes created in our analysis describe aspects of computational science, such as the requirements for entry into the field and the measures taken once one enters. Our primary intent is to utilize these descriptions to evaluate our current curriculum and inform future course development and pedagogy; however, we see value in our work to the broader community by providing this set of competencies and skills determined by our qualitative research and analysis methodologies. This work is currently being drafted for publication.
Adaptation of the Computer Programming Self-Efficacy Scale (CPSES) for Computational Science Education
We have adapted the CPSES created by Ramalingam and Wiedenbeck (1998) to the computational modeling and data analysis courses offered by the Department of Computational Math, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University. By administering this survey to our students, we aim to show the validity of this assessment for gauging student self-efficacy in this scale. A tangential motivation for the administering of this survey is to reform and adapt pedagogy and curriculum to help students develop confidence in their abilities after taking our courses.
